Suspect In Mother's Day Parade Faces 20 Charges

Thursday, May 16, 2013

A suspect has been apprehended in the New Orleans' Mother's Day Parade shooting. Akein Scott, 19, was taken into custody Wednesday night and charged in connection with the shooting that left 19 people wounded in the Little Woods section of eastern New Orleans. Scott faces 20 charges of attempted second-degree murder.

Police say they identified the suspect from surveillance camera images. Cell phone video released after the aftermath showed a crowd gathered for the Sunday parade suddenly scattering in all directions. Some victims laying on the ground, blood on the pavement and others bending over to comfort them. They appear to be running from a man in a white T-shirt and dark pants who turns and tuns out of the picture.

The social club called The Original Big 7 organized the parade that drew hundreds of people to the 7th Ward neighborhood. As many as 400 people came out for the New Orleans traditional second-line procession parade in which people dance down the street, following behind a brass band.

Shootings at parades and neighborhood celebrations have become more frequently as the city has recently struggled with crime.

The victims included 10 men, 7 women, and two 10-year-old children. Many of the victims were grazed and three of the victims were seriously wounded.
