Happy Birthday to the Father of Industrial Design...

Raymond Loewy, born November 5, 1893, was famous for his professional achievements in industrial design. Over the course of this career Loewy's design efforts varied across several industries. He begin his career has a window designer for Macy's, Wanamaker's and Saks department store and a fashion illustrator for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. It was the styling of the Coldspot refrigerator for Sear-Roebuck that established his reputation as an industrial designer.

The following are some of his more notable designs:

  • Logos for Shell and Exxon gas companies.
  • Logos for Greyhound, Nabisco and the U. S. Postal Service.
  • The Greyhound bus
  • Coca-Cola vending machines
  • Slenderized Coca-Cola bottle
  • JFK postage stamp
  • Locomotive for the Pennsylvania Railroad
  • Sear Coldspot refrigerator
  • Schick electric razors
  • Lucky Strike cigarette package
  • The interiors of NASA's Saturn I, Saturn V, and Skylab
  • The Studebaker Avanti and Champion
  • Zippo Lighter
Loewy lived a full and fruitful life. He ended his career, which spanned for seven decades, in 1980 at the age of 87. He died 6 years later in his native of France at the age of 92.
