Def Jam hip-hop artist, Rick Ross has loses his advertisement deal with fashion company Reebok after the company decided he hasn't shown an "appropriate level of remorse" for using lyrics in one of this songs that seemed to allude to raping a woman. Ross is featured in rapper Rocko's single U.O.E.N.O. Ross raps: "Put molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it. I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it." Molly, a slang term used in reference to the psychoactive drug MDMA, better known as ecstasy. After his lyrics sparked outrage from fans and activist groups, Reebok released a statement announcing it has severed ties with Ross.
"Reebok holds out partners to a high standard, and we expect the to live up to the values of our brand. "Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so. While we do not believe that Rick Ross condones sexual assault, we are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse. At this time, it is in everyone's best interest for Reebok to end its partnership with Mr. Ross."
As a lover of hip-hop and a fan of Rick Ross I completely agree with Reebok's decision to not continue their business relationship with Ross. Hip-hop culture has become increasingly irresponsible. The promotion of drugs, alcohol, and sex in excess has become more prevalent in today's rap music. I totally believe in the freedom of speech and it is one of the reason I love rap music. Hip-hop has a history of being vocal about urban street culture, violence, poverty, hardships, and other matters within African American communities. Unfortunately, a majority of popular mainstream rap artists don't give much thought into the influence they have through their lyrics. Sometimes its not what you say but how you say it. Issues like rape or sexual assault should never be taking lightly. I would like to challenge all music artists to be responsible and considerate when composing there song lyrics.
