A 46-year-old soccer referee who was punched by a teenage player during a game has died. Ricardo Portillo of Salt Lake City passed away at a Utah's Intermountain Medical Center Saturday night. Portillo was refereeing a game in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville on April 27.
The 17-year-old athlete was playing goalie during a game at Eisenhower Junior High School when he was yellow carded for pushing an opposing forward trying to score a goal. The young man began arguing with the referee and delivered a punch to the side of Portillo's head. Portillo complained about dizziness and later began vomiting blood. He was considered to be in fair condition when an ambulance arrived but later slipped into a coma due to brain swelling.
When detectives learned of the serious of Portillo condition they began searching for the young soccer player. Saturday evening, the teen accompanied by his father turned himself in to police. The teenager is currently being held in a juvenile detention center on charges of suspicion of aggravated assault and will potential face additional charges now that Portillo has died.
According to Portillo's family this is not the first time he has been attacked while referring. Johnanna Portillo, the victims daughter, and her sisters previously asked their father to stop refereeing because of the dangers of dealing with angry frustrated players. Johanna says, "it was his passion, we could not tell him no".
