New Strain of Gonorrhea "Sex Superbug", Deadlier Than AIDS

Monday, May 06, 2013
An antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea, also being called a superbug, has some analysts saying the bacteria many be worse than AIDS. "This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly," said Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine.

This gonorrhea strain, HO41, was discovered in Japan two years ago. Due to its resists against antibiotic treatment, the strain has been placed in the superbug category. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, superbugs are known to kill half of the people they attack.

Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact and can be hard to detect in male and females. If gone untreated, its effects can be life-altering. The disease can cause infertility in women and sterility in males, as well as infecting joints and heart valves in both genders. The newly found strain of gonorrhea, HO41, is incurable, and more life-threatening. "Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days," Christianson said. "This is very dangerous."
